Retail security is the largest single employment sector for SIA-licensed security officers in the UK. From high street stores and supermarkets to major shopping centres and luxury retail, demand for professional, licensed retail security officers is consistent year-round.

Most retail security roles require an SIA Security Guard licence. Where the environment includes licensed premises (bars or restaurants within a shopping centre), a Door Supervisor licence is required. See our guide to Security Guard vs Door Supervisor for clarity on which applies.

Types of Retail Security Roles

Store Detective / Loss Prevention Officer
Covert or overt surveillance to detect and deter shoplifting. Requires strong observation skills, knowledge of PACE and powers of citizen's arrest. Often involves plain clothes operation.
Retail Security Officer (Uniformed)
Visible deterrent presence in retail environments. Access control, customer assistance, incident response. The most common retail security role with consistent demand across the UK.
Shopping Centre Security
Multi-site operation covering retail units, car parks and common areas. Often includes CCTV control room duties. A CCTV Operator licence significantly increases employability for these roles.
Luxury Retail Security
High-end environments — jewellers, luxury brands, department stores — require officers with strong customer service and impeccable presentation. Pays significantly above standard retail rates.
Concierge Security
Front-of-house security for retail developments and mixed-use schemes. Combines security duties with customer service. Access management, visitor logging, deliveries. Corporate presentation essential.

Full pay benchmarks are in our UK security salary guide. The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) sets sector standards for retail security.
